a vactrol modulates the output of a 4093 oscillator playing a steady tone. we found that using a straight patch cable rendered more accurate pitches than the same circuit controlled by a vactrol (light bleed is still an issue). that being said, vactrols work great for creating expressive modulation, as demonstrated in this audio medley recorded tonight with andrew and ezra at EFFALO HQ.
we were hoping to get good control of the volume envelope but ended up with some strange interplay between the two. more research needs to be done to better understand how to properly control the volume level without effecting the pitch.
